Introduction
There are some wonderful jungle trails around Mount Kinabalu in Kinabalu Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the biodiversity features more than 1,000 species of orchid and representatives of around half the families of flowering plants in the world.
Numerous birds, amphibians, reptiles and insects thrive in habitats that range from lowland and tropical rainforests to alpine meadows and cloud forest. Carnivorous pitcher plants and the world's largest flower, the rafflesia, are among the flora - the latter found in the area close to Poring Hot Springs.
The sulphurous springs are themselves also worth a visit. Set in pretty gardens home to countless butterflies, a dip in the springs is a wonderful way to revitalise tired limbs after a trek up the mountain.
