Introduction
South Australia's wine region in one for the connoisseur, with 200 cellar doors – wine tasting venues – sat right on Adelaide's doorstep. The region benefits from a warm climate, clear skies and a pleasant cooling breeze along the coast, all of which help to coax those all-important vines to life every season. With so many varieties of fine wine to be tasted, any plans you have for a rushed visit might be sorely tested. Indeed, it's best to incorporate a few days into your wider travel plans, allowing for long lunches and lazy afternoons.
Barossa Valley
Home to some of the world's best shiraz, the Barossa Valley is one of South Australia's best-known wine regions. Upwards of 150 wineries ranging from boutique wineries to big-name sellers, such as Jacob's Creek, are based in this fertile region and the majority offer tastings. If the sheer number and vast spread seem too much to handle, the region has numerous clusters of wineries, such as Seppeltsfield Road, which should make life simpler.
Clare Valley
In 1851, Jesuits started making their own sacramental wine at Sevenhill Cellars in the Clare Valley. Today, Sevenhill Cellars still exists, producing premium red, white and fortified wine in what is one of South Australia's favourite wine regions, now home to more than 40 estates. Hop on a bicycle to follow the Riesling Trail and stop at any of the cellar doors for a quick taste before continuing on through the stunning vineyard countryside. One not to miss is Jim Barry Wines. Founded in the late 50s, its grapes are grown in 10 locations throughout the valley.
