Day 3
The Fergana Valley

With Tashkent faded into the distance, this morning, the train rumbles through the heart of eastern Uzbekistan, its polished carriages a stark contrast to the rugged landscapes outside. The Fergana Valley, a verdant oasis nestled amidst the steppes, is today's destination. Begin in Kokand, one Uzbekistan's most ancient cities, serving as a critical trading post on the Silk Road. Marvel at the architectural splendours of the Khudayar Khan Palace, a breathtaking masterpiece often referred to as the "Pearl of Kokand" and immerse yourself in the spiritual ambiance of the majestic Jami Mosque, a testament to the city's rich Islamic heritage. The journey then takes you through the Fergana Valley to the renowned ceramics hub of Rishtan where you'll witness the magic of pottery, learning the secrets of the craft and even designing your own unique ceramic masterpiece, a tangible souvenir of your unforgettable experience. The programme continues in Margilan, a vital crossroads of ancient trade routes. Here, you will have the chance to step into the time-honoured art of silk weaving as you explore a craftsman’s workshop and studio, where the secrets of this ancient craft come to life.

Days 4-5
Bukhara

Over the next two days, we delve into the captivating ancient Persian city of Bukhara. Founded by the Persian Prince Siyavush in the 5th century BC, this city is a living museum, its historical treasures meticulously restored to their former glory. Begin at the imposing Ark Fortress, once the residence of the mighty Emirs of Bukhara. Today, it houses interesting museums and the stunning 17th-century Juma Mosque. The Kalyan Mosque, with its large maqsurah rooms, pillar-domed galleries, and deeply recessed niches is a further highlight. If time permits, ascend to the Shukhov Water Tower for breathtaking 360-degree panoramas of the city.

Beyond the city’s historical heart, explore the vibrant pulse of Bukhara's bustling trading domes – a labyrinth of traditional indoor bazaars in the historical centre of the city. Your culinary journey will be equally enticing, with the rooftop restaurant of the Minorai Kalon Hotel the perfect settle to sample the delectable flavours of Bukharian cuisine, alongside the uninterrupted views of Poi-Kalyan Square. As a final treat, a traditional Uzbek barbecue will also be arranged on the train platform before your departure, with mouthwatering grilled meats among the highlights.

Day 6
Nukus

As you journey through the vast, sun-baked plains of central Uzbekistan, you'll pass scores of dusty villages, nomadic encampments and rolling dunes on your way to Nukus. Where the vast, golden sands of the Kyzyl Kum, Kara Kum and Ustyurt deserts converge, lies the enigmatic city of Nukus. A remote outpost amongst otherworldly surroundings, it’s a place where the raw beauty of the wilderness meets the sublime world of art. At the heart of this desert oasis, the Igor Savitsky State Museum of the Fine Arts, a true hidden gem, awaits. Often dubbed the ‘Louvre of the Sands,’ this extraordinary institution houses one of Central Asia’s most extensive and eclectic art collections, with over 100,000 avant-garde masterpieces and traditional crafts from the Karakalpak region.

Khiva

Today's journey begin as you arrive in the ancient oasis city of Khiva, tracing its roots back to the 10th century. As a crossroads on the Silk Road, Khiva’s culinary heritage is a fascinating blend of Chinese, Turkish and Persian influences. After a leisurely walking tour, enjoy a sumptuous lunch at a local restaurant. Try dishes from the verdant ‘shivit oshi’ to the delicate tuhum-barak, and the fresh catch of the day from the Amu Darya river, all paired with warm, freshly baked bread. Continue your exploration of Khiva’s wonders, including the impressive Nurullabai Palace, built in 1912. Marvel in the grandeur of its bronze chandeliers, crystal pendants and Venetian mirrors. As the day draws to a close, board the train as you depart for Shakhrizabz.

Day 8
Shakhrizabz

Your journey leads you to the ancient city of Shakhrizabz, the birthplace of the formidable Amir Timur. This military icon, inspired by the tactics of Genghis Khan, forged an empire that stretched across vast parts of Central Asia. We pay homage to Timur at his UNESCO-recognized statue and explore the remnants of his magnificent Ak-Saray Palace. This architectural marvel is a testament to Timur's ambition, and took a quarter of a century to construct. Then, prepare for an open-air barbecue feast that will tantalise your taste buds, alongside a time-honoured folklore performance. This enchanting cultural display is a poetic expression of Central Asia’s vibrant heritage, with its hauntingly ritualistic melodies, a window into the soul of this land.

As you wander through its ancient streets, you'll encounter a fascinating blend of architectural styles, from the mud-brick houses of the old city to the opulent mosques and mausoleums that dot the skyline. Visit the Ulugh Beg Observatory – a marvel of 15th-century astronomy – offering a glimpse into the intellectual brilliance of the Timurid era. Its massive sextant and intricate astronomical instruments are a testament to the scientific advancements of the time.

You'll also explore the Shakhi Zinda Necropolis, a stunning collection of mausoleums adorned with vibrant tiles and intricate mosaics. Each mausoleum tells a unique story, reflecting the diverse cultural influences that have shaped Samarkand. To gain a deeper appreciation for the city's rich history, visit the Meros Paper Mill. Here, witness the traditional art of paper making, a craft that has been passed down through generations.
