Just back from: Bermuda

The delightful island of Bermuda is just a seven-hour direct flight from Gatwick, and with only a four-hour time difference it makes for a great destination.

I loved the beautiful, soft pink sand beaches - at Horseshoe Bay in particular. The houses are all painted different colours, to wonderful effect when you see them grouped on the hillsides. The local people were charming, and grouped with the hotels (most with luxurious spas) and the huge number of golf courses, I felt it made an ideal holiday spot.

I was told Bermuda was in the Guinness Book of Records for having the most golf courses per square mile, and all that greenery adds to the beauty of the island. Also, most of the hotels have tennis courts and water sports on offer - not to mention the croquet lawns.

Grotto Bay
Grotto Bay is well suited for all, with safe snorkeling and swimming in the bay, as well as having beautiful caves. There are three wrecks to snorkel over in the bay, and turtles abound. Only a few minutes from the airport, but the hotel isn't affected by any noise, and a short transfer is very welcome after a long-haul flight. This hotel offers excellent value and great comfort and service, and is second-to-none for a massage in the underground grotto!

Rosewood Tucker's Point
Rosewood Tucker's Point has a shuttle bus to an excellent golf club, and also to the beach club, allegedly the largest private beach on the island. In a fairly isolated area, it is peaceful with a fabulous spa. The spa has a TAG shower (there are only six in the world) and Rosewood Tuckers Point is lucky to have one. This is a great hotel for the active, families and couples.

Rosedon Hotel
Rosedon Hotel is a tiny boutique hotel in Hamilton, great for those who like to be in the centre of things. I loved its honour bar and pantry (delicious home-made cookies!) and it has a shuttle to the long beach at Elbow Beach. There is no restaurant, so breakfast is taken around the pool, on your balcony, wherever you like. Well suited for those visiting the island on business due to its proximity to the centre, and for those who like to experience all the local restaurants.

Fairmont Hamilton Princess
Opposite Rosedon is the Fairmont Hamilton Princess - a large pink building with lots going on. If you like the beach, you can take the shuttle to the Fairmont Southampton, where there is also a fabulous PGA Golf course. Again, it's right in the centre of Hamilton, so good for just about everyone, and it has four rooms with disabled access too.

Fairmont Southampton
The Fairmont Southampton has it all - fabulous views over Southampton Harbour on one side, and the golf club and the beach on the other, and its private beach is right next to Horseshoe Bay. It's excellent for families, with a Kids Club Explorer Camp, and even has a nightclub on the premises. It has a great buzzy atmosphere.

Cambridge Beaches
Cambridge Beaches is the height of elegance, and has four beaches around it. There are pool villas, which are completely private, and the hotel has an air of romance - ideal for honeymooners. They have a vast board with names of guests who have stayed very many times - several have visited over 85 times - which says everything about their standards of service and comfort. This hotel is great for couples and those who want exclusivity and fabulous views.

Elbow Beach
Elbow Beach is a large, cottage style property with all the facilities up in the Main House. It has a mile-long beach, so great for those who want to take long walks on the edge of the pink sand, and is between two golf courses. It caters for families, business people, the single traveller, in fact it's good for everyone. And for those who are not quite so active, there are buggies to take you from the beach up to the top.

Newstead Belmont Hills
Newstead Belmont Hills is a lovely contemporary hotel, facing Hamilton marina, and they have their own launch to ferry you across. I loved the Chef's table in the kitchen, where you can pre-book the tasting menu as a special treat. Again, they have a shuttle to the beach at the nearby Coco Reef. The award-winning restaurant BLU can be found at its golf course. This property is best for couples, single travellers, and those who like to be near to Hamilton, but not in the centre.
