When is the best time to go to Antarctica?
The typical expedition ship season starts in November and goes through to February, with all ships operating between these times. This is the Austral summer and the best time to see wildlife and the best time of year for daylight!
November can be colder; however the landscapes are pristine with no penguin muck or its associated smell. The polar ice is still breaking up, however wildlife might not be as plentiful as in the later months. December to Early February sees up to 20 hours of daylight per day, and temperatures are at their warmest reaching as much as 34 degrees Fahrenheit or 1 degree Celsius. Most sea-ice would have melted by now too. From mid-February to March is the best time for whale spotting, however other animals may have left. Temperatures drop to about 29 Fahrenheit or -2 degrees Celsius, and most of the snow would have melted, leaving mud and exposed rocks to walk on.
