Location
The impressive Alila Villas Uluwatu holds a commanding position atop an elevated plateau where limestone cliffs meet the expansive ocean on Bali’s Bukit Peninsula. And, just like its Uluwatu Temple neighbour, it offers spectacular views across the deep blue and rolling swells of the Indian Ocean. However, this innovative getaway has swapped dramatic temple tiers for cutting-edge modern design, with butler-served villas host to private pools and fine dining served up in sunset cabanas. It’s all been recognised by a dazzling array of awards.
Accommodation
The Alila Villas is a slice of ultra-contemporary luxury in a spectacular setting. This is perhaps best felt in the exclusive villas. Each enjoys sweeping ocean views from private cabanas as contemporary design sensibilities are realised in a typically Balinese fashion; expect lava-rock roofs, bamboo ceilings and rattan furnishings. It’s truly tropical luxe, complete with private pool and outdoor showers. For larger groups, the two or three bedroom iterations even come with 21-metre infinity pools. But, whichever you choose, there’s a delightful array of little touches, from butler service to espresso coffee machines and an array of whole-leaf Jing teas.
Dining
Local flavours star across a pair of superb dining venues. There's the Warung’s traditional Indonesian fare and CIRE’s international favourites and Asian sharing platters. If this all sounds enticing, perhaps look into a cooking course. Or, simply indulge with afternoon tea. Then, at the Sunset Cabana Bar, you can enjoy a multi-sensory drinking experience with a superb selection of cocktails.
Activities
The spa here is a particular highlight, with age-old treatments combined with modern best practice; the Ayurvedic therapy is a special favourite. But, you don’t have to book onto a session to get your dose of relaxation, with the well-stocked library, stunning cliff-edge pool and complimentary yoga classes held each morning. It’s also hard to beat taking in the sunset over the Indian Ocean with a cold drink at the clifftop cabana. Alternatively, get your workout fix at the fully equipped gym.
Given the resort’s privileged location, you’ll also want to get out and explore. Alongside the Uluwatu Temple, some of Bali’s best beaches are just 10 minutes away – as are a collection of impressive golf courses. Alternatively, explore with the likes of cycle rides, community visits, fishing-boat cocktail cruises and tours of Bali’s off-the-beaten-track temples.
