Location
Bagan is nothing short of a world wonder. Dating back to between the 9th and 13th centuries, it’s an ancient city of over 2,000 temples, pagodas and stupas, packed into just 40 square miles. Tour on a horse drawn carriage or simply walk between them to watch as delicate spires and giant monoliths pierce the plain canopy. Each would be the centrepiece anywhere else. Get a bird’s-eye view with a hot air balloon ride or simply summit any to watch as the ancient brick is set aglow with sunsets and sunrises. And Areindmar is tucked away among the temples of New Bagan, just south of the city walls of this once-mighty capital.
Accommodation
Intimately boutique, the hotel’s 50 rooms open up onto a quiet, leafy courtyard. Here you’ll find large acacia trees and tropical plants arranged around lotus-filled ponds and green lawns. Inside, whitewashed walls hint at spacious colonialism while teakwood floors, handmade furnishings and bronze ornaments firmly ground you in Myanmar. More modern amenities are found in the satellite TVs, WiFi and individually controlled air conditioning. Purified drinking water and tea and coffee-making facilities are also available.
Dining
Starting in Myanmar, the hotel’s restaurant features regional specialities as its menus call into China before returning to continental classics. Think mouthwatering curries, expertly fried noodles and Italian favourites. Take your meals on the rattan furniture of the restaurant or dine al fresco by the pool where you can enjoy a range of appetisers. You’ll also begin your day with a complimentary breakfast that combines Asian and Western sensibilities in a buffet spread and made-to-order eggs.
Facilities
Thanks to its location, you’ll spend most of your time at Areindmar out exploring. To preserve its historic charm, transport is mostly limited to non-vehicular methods so make use of the hotel’s complimentary bike hire to cycle along quiet, dusty lanes to hidden temples and golden stupa tops that burst over the plains. Alternatively, relax back at Areindmar to enjoy the pool and its accompanying sun loungers or simply stay connected with its WiFi. There’s also all the shops and restaurants of New Bagan on your doorstep.
