Location

This boutique offering is a taste of Italy tucked away on a one-way pedestrian boulevard in central Christchurch. It’s just a short amble from the town’s sights; visit the creative ‘pop-up’ city, a collection of boutique shops and cafés housed within restored shipping containers, or take some time out in the superb Botanical Gardens after punting along the River Avon. Alternatively, head further afield with a short drive over Banks Peninsula to the pretty French style village of Akaroa or head north to Waipara for wine tastings and vineyard tours.

Accommodation

Offering just 12 guest rooms, this late Victorian townhouse is decidedly intimate. Polished timber floors, ornate plaster ceiling roses, luxury bedding and mirrored wardrobes capture the charm of yesteryear while flat screen televisions, Sky TV and complimentary WiFi mix in more modern comforts. You’ll be surprised to learn that the building dates back to 1899; it’s aged perfectly gracefully. The kauri wood accents are particularly delightful, well finished with a deep polish.

Dining

Each morning, your genial host and chef Peter will set out a complimentary continental spread and will be more than happy to prepare a cooked-to-order breakfast. It’s all served with a flat white or strong espresso – an ideal way to start the day. The staff are also able to recommend a place for lunch or dinner. Get stuck into Christchurch’s café culture or sample the fresher-than-fresh seafood on offer across a range of dining options; everything from fine dining to casual diners is represented.

Facilities

The hotel’s Italian sensibilities continue on to its lounge, where guests are encouraged to enjoy a glass of wine at day’s end – both New Zealand and international varietals are available. Alternatively, in nice weather, the outdoor courtyard garden is equally welcoming – as is a nightcap of port or brandy when you return from dinner. Guests have free use of WiFi along with a 15” Macbook Pro, enabled for complimentary international Skype calls.
