Day 3
Newport, Rhode Island

Newport is one of America’s most historic cities and is therefore awash with fascinating cultural heritage, along with striking seascapes and delectable seafood waiting to be discovered. It's also home to the oldest library in the country, spectacular summer houses and the fortress city of Fort Adams. Visit wild beaches, wineries and breweries, or simply take in the fresh ocean air and call of the seabirds on a 3.5-mile coastal walk across rugged cliffs. The walk becomes a little more challenging as it progresses, but you can always follow a shorter, easier version if you prefer.

Day 4
Boston, Massachusetts

Few American cities brim with a sense of history quite like Boston, where skyscrapers somehow don’t seem out of place with cobbled streets. If you travel during the autumn months, the foliage explodes with red, orange, and purple. You can also find a moment of calm in the Boston Public Garden. Exploring Boston feels akin to strolling through an open-air museum in parts, with the Freedom Trail linking the city’s many significant historic sites such as the Boston Massacre Site and Bunker Hill. Fenway Park is home to the famous Red Sox, a must-visit for any fans of sport. Be sure to take a moment to sample some delicious seafood, particularly the buttery clam chowder, in the Seaport District.

Day 5
Portland, Maine

Lighthouses and lobsters have always epitomised Portland. It's a fantastic place to flock to the famous beaches in warm months, but autumn is when Portland really shines. The gorgeous colour palette of the fall foliage here is a truly magnificent sight to behold. There’s more to Portland than great beaches and pretty woodlands, though, including elegant Victorian architecture, a thriving arts scene and excellent cuisine. There is also plenty of history to be learned, from its founding in 1632 and its emergence as a thriving port town to its important role in the freedom trail that helped African Americans escape slavery in the south.

Day 7
Halifax, Nova Scotia

Now that you've crossed over into Canada, your first next stop is Halifax, a city known for its music, outdoor events and its seafaring history. Nova Scotia’s capital revolves around its bustling harbour, where jet skis and heritage ships share the water. The city also offers a wonderful selection of pubs and restaurants. Be sure to try seared scallops and juicy mussels, both of which are local specialities. The shorefront boardwalk is perfect for a stroll. The Canadian Museum of Immigration offers an detailed insight into Halifax’s history as a gateway into Canada for over a million migrants. The Maritime Museum, meanwhile, explores the city’s ocean-faring history, as well as the role it played in the aftermath of the sinking of the Titanic. Peggy’s Cove lighthouse is nearby, one of the most iconic in Canada.

Day 9
Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

Charlottetown is known as the birthplace of Canada because it hosted a conference leading to the formation of the Canadian Confederation. There is a small-town charm about it, with pretty timber lighthouses and a welcoming, easy-going ambience. The Confederation Centre of the Arts pays tribute to Charlottetown’s role in the formation of the plans to create the Dominion of Canada. Charlottetown is a haven for rich, juicy seafood — particularly lobster and mussel pots —and the Culinary Institute of Canada’s students mean the area is simmering with cooking talent. A thriving craft brewery scene completes the picture.

Day 11
Saguenay, Quebec

The Saguenay fjord lies at the intersection of three sprawling national parks amidst some of North America’s most impressive scenery. It's also a hotspot for whale watching, to be sure to keep a close eye out. You might also be interested to learn about Saguenay’s heritage with a tour of the pulp mill, dating back to the 1800s, or visit the Petite Maison Blanche, a humble wooden house which somehow survived the major floods of 1947. Alternatively, venture to the Saguenay Fjord National Park on a kayaking tour, a hike, a bike ride or a sightseeing cruise to view the area's natural beauty and abundant wildlife, ranging from moose and wolves to orcas, belugas, and blue whales. Adventurers can scale rock faces, or for something a little calmer, retreat to a secluded beach.

Day 12
Quebec City

Quebec City is one of North America’s oldest cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The French flavour is just as strong as it is in Montreal, with street-side cafes and characterful cobbled neighbourhoods. The city’s storied old quarter is full of the French storybook feel, with a funicular linking the upper and lower towns. The famous Château Frontenac watches over the city, and a wooden boardwalk at Dufferin Terrace offers stunning views. Wander uneven cobbled streets to Place Royale, where the city was founded, and between the bistros and boutiques of the Quartier Petit Champlain. Sample international food and deliciously greasy poutine, or taste local cheeses at the Marché du Vieux-Port indoor market. Of course, don't miss the chance to savour Canada’s fabled maple syrup, revered like wine in these parts.
