Ocean cruise
Discover Norwegian Fjordland in true luxury on a Silversea cruise. Begin with two nights in Copenhagen, where you’ll explore on your own and enjoy luxury accommodations. Next, hop onboard the Silver Dawn for your luxury all-inclusive fjord cruise as you make your way toward Norway. Visit some of Norway’s cities, such as Bergen, Ålesund, and Trondheim. You’ll realise right away that you’re never far from nature in stunning Norway, with ample opportunity to either explore the quaint cities themselves or escape into the wilderness. More remote stops—such as Åndalsnes, Olden, and Vik—give you a look at Norway’s ancient past, surrounded as always by the beautiful fjords. Finally, get to know another side of Denmark in Skagen as you make your way back toward Copenhagen. With two days at sea, you’ll also have time to enjoy the plentiful culinary options, spa, and your comfortable stateroom onboard Silver Dawn.

Day
1
Fly to Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen
Spend today exploring Copenhagen on your own. It’s easy to hire a bicycle (or e-bike, to take the strain out of things!). Whizz around, admiring the modern architecture in the centre and the pastoral colours of Nyhavn waterfront. Stop to see the Little Mermaid statue, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s famous fairy tale. Feel the cosy Danish concept of hygge in the warm cafes stuffed to the brim with thick books. Copenhagen is home to mega-brewer Carlsberg, along with a thriving craft beer scene. Danish Smørrebrød sandwiches are a must try, or for something a little more substantial, settle in for a culinary voyage and try a taster menu at one of the city’s many Michelin-starred restaurants.

Bergen, Norway
Visitors to Bergen are charmed by the crooked, pastel-coloured warehouses on its World Heritage Bryggen waterfront. Bergen is Norway’s second-largest city, but it has a decidedly warm and village-like feel. Behind the colourful facades of the waterfront lies a labyrinth of narrow alleyways teeming with craft shops and bustling galleries. If you’re feeling active, a short but steep hike up Fløyen Mountain is in order—or jump on the funicular to enjoy the views without the exertion. Nearby Nærøyfjorden is perhaps Norway’s most iconic piece of scenery. A cruise through the base of this narrow fjord is a humbling experience, the slopes rising imposingly over you. Sognefjord, Norway’s longest fjord, also stretches out nearby, adorned with plunging waterfalls and vibrant farms.

Ålesund, Norway
Ålesund, with its decorative turrets and pastel-painted buildings, is one of the world’s finest havens of Art Nouveau architecture. The city’s distinctive Jugendstil style is complemented stunningly by its proximity to colossal fjord scenery. Ålesund is without a doubt one of Norway’s most beautiful towns, with every building boasting fantastical flourishes. Visit the Aksla Viewpoint to take in the true majesty of the town’s dreamlike archipelago setting. Satisfy your sweet tooth with a bite of folded svele, an indulgent Norwegian pancake, or pop into a cosy restaurant for something more substantial. This is a sea trade town, and dried, salted cod—known as klipfish—is a speciality. In fact, Ålesund produces an incredible two thirds of the world’s supply.

Trondheim, Norway
Trondheim, Norway’s historic capital, was founded in 997 AD by Viking King Olav Tryggvason. Its intimate feel is enhanced by a photogenic waterfront and charming wooden warehouses. Find a flavour of the old city—destroyed after a fire—in the Bakklandet neighbourhood. Cyclists rattle past timber houses and colourful wharves along the cobbled streets, flowers spilling down from window ledges of cafes, restaurants, and curiosity shops. Pass rows of houses either side of the river at the Old Town Bridge (Gamle Bybro) as you make your way to the towering Nidarios Cathedral. Despite its long history, Trondheim is a leading technology centre and home to 30,000 students. Take in the city’s beauty with a trundling tour aboard the world’s most northerly tram.

Åndalsnes, Norway
Åndalsnes is located at the shores of the Romsdalsfjord and used to be famous for salmon fishing. The Rauma River flows through the breathtaking Romsdalen Valley, and while its salmon stocks are being replenished, Åndalsnes has become famous for alpine sports: mountaineering, climbing, hiking, indoor climbing, and base-jumping. Just outside of Åndalsnes, you’ll find the steep inclines of the Trollstigen (Troll Road), with its eleven hairpin bends. The three-hour roundtrip rail journey from Åndalsnes to Dombas on the Rauma Railway line is a feast for the eyes. From the comfort of your carriage, pass mountains, valleys, and waterfalls, following the Rauma River and slowing down at the most photogenic spots. The train passes over countless bridges and through tunnels, even performing a 180-degree turn underground.

Olden, Norway
Tiny Olden, with only 500 villagers, features nature at its most spectacular. The village is nestled on the southern banks of the Nordfjord, making it the perfect spot from which to enjoy dreamy lake cruises, kayak its glass-smooth waters, spot cascading glaciers, or ascend to staggering viewpoints. See mainland Europe’s largest glacier, Jostedalsbreen, resting between the mountains, or head up to the white terminus of the Briksdal Glacier to see the icy expanse close-up. Take a coffee break at Lovatnet Lake and give the local waffles and strawberry jam a try before heading out onto the blue-green water, mountain walls towering above you. The slightly larger village of Loen is nearby. Jump on the Skylift for a bill-topping view from the perch of Mount Hoven.

Vik, Norway
Vik is, simply put, Fjordland at its finest. The National Geographic Traveller magazine has named it ‘the world’s most iconic destination,’ and it’s little wonder. Legend has it that Vikings and Trolls battled it out on these very waters. The pretty stave of churches—of which Vik has two—are built on sacred Norse land. This is a place that feels as though it could have been written by the likes of Tolkien: a mysterious land where mists roll off the mountains, the air crisp and silent, the glassy Fjords the true rulers of the kingdom. Step into a land of enchantment, with the landscape steeped in Viking heritage and Scandinavian myths.

Skagen, Denmark
You’d be remiss to end your Danish discovery in Copenhagen alone, as Denmark is considered the world’s happiest country. Skagen (pronounced skane) is testament to that. It is a jumble of Scandinavian charm, with a fabulous arts scene and breathtaking nature coexisting harmoniously. It features one of Europe’s most stunning coastlines, with white-sand beaches espousing vast forests. The sunsets here are so spectacular that whole families often actually applaud from the beach as the sun disappears. Unsurprisingly for a place that is on the meeting point of two seas (the North and the Baltic), fishing plays an important part in the local economy. Marinated herring is a local speciality, and the nutrient-rich surroundings mean fish of all kind is flavourful and plentiful.
