Rail journey
Climb aboard one of the world’s most famous train journeys as you follow the alpine route between Christchurch and Greymouth, swapping coasts in the process. You’ll cross the fertile farmlands of the Canterbury Plains and travel alongside the ice-fed Waimakariri River to enjoy giant views over deep gorges before traversing the mighty Southern Alps themselves. Here, every twist and turn rewards with spectacular views of the chiselled landscape. You’ll then descend through thick strands of native beech forest to reach Greymouth, a gateway for the west coast’s vast glaciers, wild rivers and the famed Punakaiki pancake rocks. The route is also available in reverse.
