Rail journey
Immerse yourself in the rugged coastal architecture of New Zealand. Travelling between Picton’s Marlborough Sounds and Christchurch, the Coastal Pacific skirts precipitously close to the Pacific Ocean where the roaring, windblown sea meets enormous forest-clad mountains. Between virgin bush and winding rivers, much of it is scenery that you’d miss by road. Sit back in comfort as it all glides past your oversized panoramic windows, perhaps enjoying a New Zealand delicacy from the café carriage. Linking with the Interislander ferry and Sounds Air flights over the summer season, it’s a practical option too. You’ll also have the chance to stop in Kaikoura for its world famous whale watching.
