Introduction
Tarangire is one of northern Tanzania's lesser-known safari parks, but has plenty to commend it all the same. While more densely vegetated than the Serengeti, a visit to Tarangire allows the chance to see many of the same species. Tall grasses and ancient baobabs provide cover, but decent sightings of wildebeest, buffalo, eland, giraffe and gerenuk antelopes can still be expected.
Elephants are another animal that can almost always be seen in Tarangire, especially during the dry season, when large herds - sometimes several hundred strong - congregate by the Tarangire River. The park also has a fine reputation for bird spotting, with red-and-yellow barbets, fish eagles and saddle-billed storks among the 500 bird species that have been recorded in Tarangire.
