Introduction
Compact and bijou Liechtenstein is virtually lost between Austria and Switzerland; it's just 25km from north to south and 6km from east to west, making it possible to walk across the country in no time at all. Well-to-do and prosperous, there are low taxes and high standards of living for the locals, who include the wealthiest royal family in Europe.
Vaduz is more Alpine village than national capital, but still has a charming atmosphere, impressive castle and magnificent mountain views. Collect a passport stamp at the tourist office to earn bragging points, then check out the National Museum, postage Stamp Museum and Art Museum, the latter which houses works by Rembrandt, Rubens and Van Dyck.
Outdoor enthusiasts should head into the rugged mountains, to the Malbun and Steg ski resorts, which are good for beginners and cross-country skiers respectively.
