Introduction
San Martín de Los Andes is situated high in the foothills of the Andes, a stone's throw from the Argentine border with Chile. This lovely tourist town is around 60 miles from Bariloche and set on the eastern shore of Lacar Lake. San Martin de Los Andes' attractions include the Museo Primeros Pobladores, with displays explaining the region's colonisation by Europeans.
But the real draw is San Martín's stunning surroundings. Beautiful Lacar Lake is a perfect place for kayaking, with excellent mountain panoramas stretching along its shores. Trekking and mountain biking among impressive mountain passes nearby are just as popular. The summer is a key time for bird watching, when birds of prey drift across the clean air, while in winter, the Chapelco resort, just north of San Martin de Los Andes, attracts skiers from across Argentina.
