Introduction
Jericoacoara was once a sleepy fishing village surrounded by dunes and lagoons, where hippies would hangout for months at a time, enjoying the lazy coastal vibe. Nowadays its' a much more mainstream destination, attracting holidaymakers from Brazil's cities and overseas. But despite it's increased popularity it remains a magical place to visit, with plenty of its original charm.
Many come for the sailing, kite surfing and wind surfing - which are excellent along this stretch of the North Eastern Brazil coast, thanks to the strong winds that sweep in from the Atlantic. Dune buggy tours into the surrounding sands, watching sunsets from the top of the dunes and taking a capoeira class on the beach are a few other possibilities. Buggy tours often head out to Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Paraíso, two of the prettiest lagoons, a few miles to the east of Jericoacoara - passing sand dunes, coconut groves and other scenic spots on the way.
