The word magical doesn’t often apply to structures of concrete, steel and glass, but at Areias Do Seixo it most emphatically does. This modernist eco-hotel is seriously impressive in terms of design and comfort.
Located on a protected stretch of Portugal’s Silver Coast, the hotel has spectacular views. Its interiors are almost as dramatic. Rooms and villas are astonishing affairs involving concrete, granite, wood, Perspex and pebbles. Sculptures bedecked with fairy lights, scented candles and hanging fireplaces make the whole experience a sensual one though. Most rooms have four posters, huge bathrooms with sunken baths and monsoon showers. All have private wooden decks to make the most of the rugged views. There are villas too, with private pools.
The main pool is surrounded by comfortable loungers and a four-poster bed, and there’s a superb spa, as well as a wonderful beach to explore. In the evenings, guests congregate around a bonfire. It’s all very relaxing and convivial, with the hosts on hand, sometimes with guitar and song. The emphasis is very much on sustainability, with almost all the food sourced from the hotel’s own garden and from the local area.
The hotel is happy to arrange guided dune walks and foraging trips for mussels and herbs. The meals, served in a candle-lit room at hefty wooden tables, are sensational and seasonal. Areias Do Seixo is a five-star and fine-dining experience with a difference.
