Location
Lorde Howe is one of Australia’s unnoticed island gems. 10km long and 600km from the east coast, not many make the flight out, but those who do agree it’s more than worth it. The lodge itself has views over a spectacular crescent beach, framed by jutting green hills. It’s not surprising that the island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with three quarters of the island permanently preserved as a Marine Park and sub-tropical rainforest.
Accommodation
With precise contemporary design, the lodge’s whitewashed walls and verticality are intended to mirror the beach and mountains it sits among. As the island’s premier accommodation, Capella’s nine contemporary suites are spacious, light-filled and well appointed. All offer ocean views but look to the split-level loft rooms for commanding vistas and large living areas. For the ultimate, the Lidbird Pavilion has a private plunge pool and a panoramic deck.
Dining
The onsite restaurant employs a regional approach to offer the best in pacific cuisine. The day starts with a buffet-style breakfast consisting of seasonal fruits and juice, organic cereals and fresh bakery items. This is followed by a hot breakfast menu, furnished with a European-style selection of cheese and cold cuts. Light lunches of fresh, line-caught fish, salads and pastas are certain to please, while Capella also puts on gourmet picnic and barbecue packs for those heading out. End the day with a balanced three-course dinner menu, drawing on locally sourced seafood complemented by herbs from the lodge’s own garden.
Facilities
To make the most of its stunning location and the view over its secret beach, the lodge has multiple decks, a lounge and opening floor-to-ceiling windows. The horizon pool has particularly good views over the jewel-toned reef below. Capella Lodge also features a small spa that offers a menu of rejuvenating and relaxation treatments both inside and al fresco. Rates at the lodge include an open bar from 6pm, with premium wines and cocktails to be enjoyed while the sun sets over the South Pacific.
