Capofaro Resort, Salina, Aeolian Islands

Location

Set on 15 acres of historic vineyards, this luxury resort is famed for its malvasia grapes. First introduced by Greek settlers in the sixth century BC, they’re known for their aromatic notes, imparted by low fermenting temperatures. Since these ancient beginnings, the award-winning wines have become the Aeolian Islands’ signature product. And, Capaforo itself – set on the secluded northeastern tip of Salina – is perfectly poised for sunning them. As the second largest of the Aeolian Islands, its lush landscapes of carpeted hillsides and towering cliffs are a striking contrast to its cousins’ volcanic severity. Climb its two extinct volcano peaks or take a lazy boat cruise around its scenic perimeter. 

Accommodation

Across twenty individually designed rooms, Capofaro marries typical Aeolian architecture – think thick walls, squat profiles and woven cane roofs – with a considered minimalist style. In each, bedrooms open up onto private sea-view terraces. Shaded by native trees, it’s possible to make out the distant outlines of Stromboli and Panarea islands from your recline. If you’re lucky, you’ll also be treated to the former’s fireworks to go with your vineyard vistas. The whitewashed sensibilities of the interiors are then picked out by splashes of muted ochre, evident across the fine linens of the queen-size beds and the wicker easy chairs.

Dining

Family owned, Capofaro’s restaurant is Sicilian through and through. Home cooked dishes make uses of traditional recipes; it’s all overseen by chef Ludovico De Vivo. Despite his experience in internationally acclaimed restaurants, his menus stay true to his southern Italian roots, showcased by local ingredients. There’s a special focus on produce from the island. It’s all served up on a romantic candle-lit dining terrace. For breakfast, expect a buffet spread of fresh fruit, jam tarts and those Italian cold cut favourites. 

Facilities

Over summer, you’ll want to spend your afternoons on the resort’s private beach, reached by a complimentary shuttle service. However, year round, you’ll enjoy use of the freshwater pool along with the services of the massage area, set in the garden cottage. To head out and explore, hire a scooter to zip along the island’s scenic roads or book a day on Capofaro’s Don Felipe motor yacht to dip in and out of coves, bays and caves. To help you take a break, mobile services are only available in certain parts of the resort, although WiFi is spread throughout.
