Having begun life as a 17th-century hunting lodge, today this Relais-&-Châteaux jewel is an ultra-luxury retreat given over to spa treatments and fine-dining indulgences. It’s all wrapped up by the snow-capped peaks of South Tyrol, which look down on the church spires of quaint Merano.
Even the entry-level rooms at the Castel Fragsburg feature red-marble bathrooms, wrought-iron chandeliers and balconies with views of the surrounding vineyards. They’re almost as impressive as the suites, which, for just a little extra, offer extra space and balcony overlooks of the spectacular Texel peaks. Additionally, the suites’ smith-forged furniture and floral prints are especially impressive, and those with four-poster beds and en-suite saunas are definite favourites.
However, whichever you choose, you’ll be treated to the same spectacular half-board indulgences. It all begins with a “Breakfast Royale” that includes everything from Prosecco and just-squeezed juices to Mediterranean antipasti and oven-fresh-bread. Then, for dinner, you’ll enjoy a five-course spectacular informed by local ingredients. Indeed, whether it’s an iced-fruit skewer served by the pool or handpicked chestnuts roasted in the rose garden, fine cuisine truly permeates the hotel.
And, the Fragsburg’s amenities are suitably luxurious, the Alchemistic Healing Spa, the first of its kind in the world, is inspired by the ancient knowledge of herbal medicine and the almost-forgotten teachings of alchemy. The strength and inspiration from the fertile flora of South Tyrol that surrounds the property to offer harmonising full-body treatments, massages and healing baths. Alongside the beautiful pool and larch-wood sauna, there’s even four different saunas to choose from. Otherwise, simply stroll round the 50,000 square metres of castle gardens, or pick up a newspaper from the library, before booking onto a yoga class.
