Location
Located on the eastern coast of the world’s largest sand island, the retreat is just 200m back from one of the many pristine strips of surf beach that make up the coast. Heading inland will bring you onto the tracks that thread through dense, mossy forest and past clear-water springs to offer sights of the island’s indigenous wildlife. Explore these by hired four wheel drive or on foot with the the islands most popular attractions – Lake Wabby, Lake Mackanzie, Rainbow Gorge, Maheno Beach and Indian Head all within easy reach. The island itself is accessible by ferry from the mainland or by light plane. This hotel is featured as part of an overnight tour of Fraser Island with our parter, Discovery Tours.
Accommodation
The nine spacious guest cabins are constructed from reclaimed island timber, meaning low impact on both the environment and the eye. Set on a gently sloping forested hill, the accommodation is clean and comfortable and features en suite bathrooms, ceiling fans and in-room fridges. Happily, all are contained by the valley’s dingo fence designed to keep the ‘overly friendly’ native population at bay.
Dining
The retreat’s restaurant, Satinay, offers al fresco dining on its expansive deck so guests can enjoy their meals accompanied by views into the surrounding forestry. If you fancy an alternative to bistro dining, look to the camp kitchen where all utensils, crockery and cutlery are provided. Enjoy a true Australian experience on the camp’s barbecue.
Facilities
For those making use of the barbecue or kitchen facilities, a small onsite supermarket sells groceries, drinks, ice and confectionaries. You can also stock up on all-important diesel and fishing gear to fuel your island exploration or simply enjoy a coffee and a snack before heading out. In the evening, enjoy a drink on the bar’s verandah or take a refreshing dip in the sunken pool.
