Location
Sofitel Luang Prabang offers the rare chance to stay in an enchanting, ancient place – the UNESCO-listed city of Luang Prabang – in an atmosphere of unbridled contemporary luxury. The architect, Duangrit Bunnag, is responsible for some excellent modernist beach hotels, and here he’s wedded a handful of original French colonial buildings (including the old governor’s residence) to a number of new buildings, heavily influenced in turn by traditional Laos architecture. The hotel is excellently located just a ten-minute walk from the centre of town and a 20 minute drive from Luang Prabang International Airport.
Accommodation
There are four suite categories at the hotel: Garden, Heritage, Pool and Governor, which all fan out from the central garden. The décor is sophisticated with traditional dark-wood furnishings, high ceilings, polished concrete floors and neutral palettes. Garden Suites are impressively spacious at 45 to 56 square metres, and open onto a garden terrace and private high-walled garden. Bathrooms offer twin vanities and separate rain showers and bathtubs. Heritage Suites feature spacious landscaped gardens with individual daybeds, as well as spa-like bathrooms. Pool Suites feature king-sized beds, while Governor Suites are distinctive and grand with generous sitting and dressing areas.
Dining
The Library is the main restaurant and bar at the hotel. It’s an all-day dining restaurant, open daily from 6:30 am, and features traditional Lao cuisine and fine wines. There’s also a bar included in The Library, which serves a wide selection of fine wines and excellent cocktails. You’re also very welcome to order room service and have hot dishes or cold dishes delivered straight to the comfort of your suite. Be sure too to try the restaurants of 3 Nagas, the sister hotel, just a few minutes down the road.
Facilities
The superb Spa offers a range of treatments and massages in quiet, high-ceilinged rooms adorned with flowers and candles. Alternatively, try your hand at Lao-style cooking, watch the daily morning procession of saffron-robed monks collecting alms in the streets of Luang Prabang, tour the town’s temples, climb Mount Phousi for sunset views, or visit the Kuang Si Waterfalls, a 40-minute drive from the hotel. You can also make the most of the hotel’s excellent sports facilities, including a swimming pool, golf course and tennis courts.
