Location
World Heritage listed Fraser Island is a jewel in the Coral Sea. Long, uninterrupted beaches are flanked by striking sand cliffs while the interior is dominated by swathes of rainforest speckled with fast-flowing creeks. With indigenous dingoes, over 300 species of bird and a variety of subtropical flora and fauna, it’s rewarding to explore by foot or by four-wheel drive. The resort is tucked away amid the island’s foliage just a stone’s throw from the more easily accessible western shoreline. It’s best reached by boat from the mainland’s east coast or a chartered flight.
Accommodation
The resort’s collection of hotel rooms and villas are tucked neatly amid the island’s foliage making for an atmospheric setting. Resort rooms have private timber decks to make the most of their rainforest location or you can upgrade to a sea view and spa bath. However, the resort is best known for its decked villas nestled in the rainforest treetops.
For a bit extra, look to the villas with spa baths on their private balconies or the barbecue of the generously proportioned Kingfisher Houses. Lastly, to get an extra step towards nature, the resort’s Wilderness Lodges are perfect as shared accommodation deeper in the bush. All lodging is built off the ground so as to leave wildlife uninterrupted and promote airflow.
Dining
In typical resort fashion, expect to be spoilt for choice when it comes to dining. The complex’s signature restaurant, Seabelle, takes its culinary notes from the indigenous Butchulla tribe with menus based on seasonal, local produce as fresh seafood is garnished in herbs picked in the kitchen’s gardens.
The local Maheno Restaurant serves a buffet breakfast, light lunches and, come the evening, specialises in fantastic pizzas. For a more relaxed dining experience, head to the Sand Bar and Bistro where diners picnic among the trees and sip cocktails as the sun sets.
Facilities
With four swimming pools, two spas, a tennis court and four bars, there’s plenty to keep you occupied. However, there’s also a range of activities bookable from the resort that make the most of Fraser Island. From ranger-guided canoeing and Segway adventures to water-sports and self-guided walks, there’s plenty for even the most intrepid of explorers.
