Natural world
Location
The most iconic of the Aeolian Islands, Stromboli’s perfectly conical silhouette rises, still smoking, from the Tyrrhenian Sea. It’s the true Platonic archetype of volcanoes. And, La Sirenetta, surrounded by multi-coloured blooms at the volcano’s base, enjoys a picturesque location, overlooking the azure waters from its little patch of shaded green. It’s set just back from Ficogrande Beach whose famous black sands characterise the powerful natural forces on show here. However, it’s the island’s crater fireworks that are its true highlight, reached by scenic sunset hikes. Elsewhere, you’ll also find evidence of Neolithic lava stone settlements.
Accommodation
Translating literally as ‘the little mermaid’, La Sirenetta’s location dips its toes in the waters, a view that many of the rooms take advantage of. Each has a balcony or terrace and those that don’t feature vistas over the sparkling waters enjoy a quiet garden setting or pool overlook. Sit back and relax on your sun lounger while you take in the view of Isola di Strombolicchio, a tiny, isolated rock flung out into the sea that’s host to a distinctive whitewashed lighthouse. Inside, air conditioning, TVs and seating provide the comfort while giant paintings of the region provide a sense of place.
Dining
Across two sea-view restaurants and a bar, the hotel offers a rich selection of traditional Sicilian dishes, based on fresh, local ingredients. Of course, given its location, you should expect the finest in just-caught seafood as a speciality. At La Veranda you’ll look out to Ficogrande’s black sand and the Strombolicchio Lighthouse beyond as you enjoy capers, wild fennel, squid and fresh fish. The Tartana Club is equally accommodating, host to live Mediterranean music; it’s especially known for its pastries. Lastly, Caffè Morseco is always available, whether you’re after a fine Italian coffee or a snack in your room.
Facilities
Despite its intimacy, La Sirenetta hosts a wide range of amenities. If your volcano hike wasn’t taxing enough, make use of the gym and pool or play a few sets on the tennis court, idyllically positioned between the sea and olive groves. You’ll enjoy views out to where the hotel’s scuba club runs dives at some of the region’s most impressive spots. If you’d prefer something more relaxing, book a massage with one of the hotel’s certified therapists. Offerings range from Thai and sports to Ayurvedic and aesthetic treatments. The hotel is also more than happy to source your favourite national or international newspaper, complementing its extensive library.
