Location
Shared with Peru, Lake Titicaca is – according to Incan legend – the birthplace of the sun. And as South America’s largest lake, it’s a destination that’s nothing short of stunning with its vast waters the foreground to rising Andean peaks, pre-Incan ruins and a rolling patchwork of agricultural hills. And, nearing its picturesque centre, you’ll find Isla del Sol – the appropriately named Sun Island. Here you’ll find several traditional communities, pre-Columbian sites, golden sands and this charming lodge. Set on the island’s highest point, it offers pastoral vistas that sweep over the island, out across the shimmering waters to the snow-capped peaks beyond.
Accommodation
As a former 17th century hacienda, this is Bolivia at its most charming, It’s ideal for those looking to experience rustic authenticity while staying in touch with legendary surrounds. And, with just 20 rooms, you’ll find Posada del Inca perfectly intimate, complete with traditional artwork, colourful fabrics and intriguing decorations, sourced from local communities. Rooms themselves are found in the hacienda’s terracotta jumble and come equipped with en suite baths, electric blankets and individual heating.
Dining
Located on a tiered garden that blends horticultural care with wild planning, Posada del Inca is fully concerned with making the most of its picturesque setting. As such, weather permitting, you’ll take your meals outside with simple dishes lovingly prepared. Of course, this being Bolivia, you can expect a range of soup favourites – ideal for after a high-altitude hike. Try and time your evening meal with sunset to dine to a backdrop kaleidoscope.
Facilities
At Posada del Inca, you’ll swap resort-style amenities for peaceful heritage. Take a walk through its grounds, have a cup of tea under a straw canopy or relax on a wicker lounge, as you discover how the Sun Island got its name. Back inside, unwind in front of the lounge’s fireplace or enjoy a fine South American vintage in the bar. And, with no vehicles on the island, be sure to head out and explore on ranging hikes to visit the sandy beaches on the east coast or some of the indigenous communities.
