Location
The hotel is perfectly poised to explore the delights of Florence, set just next door to its piazza namesake. It's home to the city's principal – and the world's largest – Franciscan church; built in 1385, it's the burial site of such notable figures as Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli. The basilica is also notable for its grand neo-Gothic marble façade – the front to a stunningly ornate interior. Otherwise, the hotel is superbly located for Firenze's other sights whether you want a city overview from the Piazzale del Michelangelo or an up close look at the cathedral's fantastically detailed ceiling.
Accommodation
This 18th century residence provides the perfect balance between traditional luxury and modern comfort. Just as the hotel's public spaces are beautifully decorated with plush furnishings and frescoed ceilings, its rooms come complete with period furniture and delicate textiles. Deluxe Rooms variously mix in four-poster beds and exposed beam authenticity while the high-ceilinged suites come with private terrace views of the Florentine skyline, including the Santa Croce Basilica. Whatever you choose, being greeted by a small house-baked cake along with a selection of fruit or spread of chocolate is certainly a nice touch.
Dining
Be sure to book ahead for table at Enoteca Pinchiorri, a three-star Michelin restaurant housed within the same building. Here, experimental techniques have imbued regional traditions with fresh life while still remaining faithful to their culinary roots. Alternatively, the hotel's own restaurant, Guelfi e Ghibellini, serves Tuscan specialities enriched by Mediterranean produce sourced from the local markets. It's everything you'd expect from dining at a luxury Relais & Châteaux property.
Facilities
Given its position right in the historic centre of the city, Relais Santa Croce has opted for authentic luxury over leisure facilities. Instead, you'll want to get out an explore the many highlights of Florence, with a great number of the city's tourist attractions, shops and restaurants within walking distance. Don't miss out on sampling the famous Florentine steak or enjoying a glass of the local Tuscan red.
