Location
Found on Gran Canaria’s southernmost point, this boutique offering is hidden away in the heart of a palm growth that sweeps down onto golden sands. Indeed, Maspalomas Beach is just a few minutes’ stroll away. Turn the other way, however, and you’ll be in the island’s mountainous interior where hiking trails and scenic drives bring you between pretty villages and Gran Canaria’s unique collection of flora. Closer to base, the nearby Avenida de Meloneras offers more urbane charms in its boutiques, restaurants and bars.
Accommodation
Designed in the Spanish colonial tradition, the Grand Hotel Residencia is all terracotta roofs, whitewashed panelling and palm-tree-lined gardens. The interiors were designed by acclaimed French architect Alberto Pinto, featuring dark-wood furnishings, handmade tiles and delightfully patterned fabrics. However, it’s the private terraces and balconies that are the standout attraction. Featuring teak furniture, they’re the perfect spot to relax with a good book and views of the hotel’s gardens. There is also a collection of suites; measuring up to 78m2, they feature separate lounges and espresso machines.
Dining
At the Grand Hotel Residencia, you’ll be introduced to Gran Canaria’s fresh cuisine at its Michelin-recommended restaurant. Here, sommelier-paired menus are served up al fresco, while bi-weekly barbecues add some extra indulgence. And, while you can dine inside on the designer furnishings, taking your meal under the hotel’s thousand-year-old palm trees and enjoying views of the island’s mountains is perfectly evocative. You’ll also have the option of dining on Mediterranean classics at Esencia, or on gourmet tapas bites at La Bodega. Lastly, the Pool Bar offers plenty of light snacks and bites to keep you going.
Facilities
To complement the suite of dining options, the Piano Bar and Pool Bar offer an extensive drinks menu of craft cocktails and fine wines, often backdropped by live music. However, for something more active, you might want to take advantage of the hotel’s preferential green fees at the nearby golf courses. There’s also an excellent fitness centre equipped with the latest Technogym equipment, while activities range from aqua gymnastics and yoga sessions to watersports, hiking and personal trainer services. You’ll just have to remember to find time to relax by the pool and enjoy the spa services.
