Location
“This lake exceeds anything I ever beheld in beauty,” writes Shelley. And, set in the shadow of the snow-capped Rhaetian Alps, its 120 km of idyllic coastline scattered with perfectly formed villages, Lago di Como certainly measures up. This luxury, upscale option is found right on its shores, in the lake’s southwestern reaches. It’s also perfectly secluded, tucked away in 25 acres of Renaissance gardens that feature mosaics that date back to the 1500s and its very own nympheum. It’s all delightfully marked out by everything from beds of roses and azaleas to rows of chestnut and palm trees.
Accommodation
A former 16th century princely residence, this grand palace was first built for Tolomeo Gallio, the Cardinal of Como, and its rich history has seen it owned by everyone from Napoleonic generals to Russian empresses. Each room is equipped with every comfort and all are elegantly furnished with antiques, paintings, vintage prints, silks and luxurious marble bathrooms. In turn, balconies, terraces and large windows take in views over Lake Como and the hotel’s gardens. For something extra special, there are also four 19th century private villas along with a collection of truly opulent suites.
Dining
Ever accommodating, dining is available throughout the day, across a range of venues. Whether it’s formal lakeside fine dining, cosy grill menus or casual garden dinners, you’ll be well looked after. Even if you’re going for a swim, you’ll be able to enjoy a light bite or snack poolside. Throughout, expect only the finest ingredients, showcased across menus that are both inventive and time-honoured traditional. You’ll enjoy live music evenings along with drinks under the chestnut trees and nights at the exclusive D’Este Club.
Facilities
As you’d expect, Villa d’Este features a full complement of luxurious amenities. Start with the superb wellness centre for a range of spa treatments, saunas and fitness options. For further exertion, the hotel offers everything from eight tennis courts and a range of jogging trails to squash, electronic golf and a putting green. Alternatively, hit the lake for waterskiing, sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. And, alongside the indoor offering, there’s even a pool that floats on Lake Como, complete with Jacuzzi. One point of particular pride is the hotel’s art collection, with both public spaces and guest rooms adorned with historic works. Highlights include the Colonne Room with its biblical paintings and the Flora Room’s statue of Eros and Psyche from the School of Antonio Canova. The only disappointment? The lavish Napoleone Room never hosted the Emperor himself, who planned to visit and simply never showed up.
