Introduction
While the UK is in the grasp of winter, February is an ideal time to get away for a spot of winter sun. Otherwise, stay closer to home for cold-weather adventures under the Northern Lights.
High-Arctic adventures
Much of northern Europe is still tucked up under its snowy blanket. Snowmobiles and dogsleds rush through the wilds of Finnish and Swedish Lapland, while the ICEHOTEL stands majestically. And, for the best Northern Lights viewing, head to Tromso – Norway’s Arctic capital. Not to be outdone, Canada also excites with ice hotels, mountain lodges and winter activities.
The Americas & Caribbean
On the other hand, Central America and the Caribbean remain temptingly sunny. Costa Rica is a particular highlight, along with Cuba – just remember to book early for those cigars and mojitos. Further south, in Brazil, the country begins to dance to the beat of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, again to be booked well in advance. Further celebrations can be had with the wildly popular Mardi Gras in New Orleans. It’s also a great time to visit the rest of southern America or make a hop out to Hawaii.
Escape to Africa
North Africa offers unbroken sunshine at this time of year, so cool off with a cruise down the Nile, stopping off at the ancient heritage of Luxor and Aswan. Alternatively, head down to Tanzania for tropical island life on Zanzibar and the Serengeti’s wildebeest calving – a predator’s dream. South Africa also excites with safaris and spectacular Garden-Route drives.
A great month for cruises
If you're feeling the pull of the sea, February has some superb cruise options to choose from. Perhaps head for the Arctic on Hurtigruten's now classic round trip sailing from Bergen to Kirkenes, or venture further afield to the Caribbean for an island-hopping voyage with Regent Seven Seas. For something truly adventurous, Antarctica's dramatic landscapes and unique wildlife are at their best at the height of the Southern Hemisphere summer.
