Vilanculos is the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago and was named after a local tribal chief called Gamala Vilankulo Mukoke. An international airport on its outskirts serves this small and friendly town, with daily connections to Maputo and Johannesburg.

Mozambique's capital, Maputo, provides plenty of attractions and distractions for travellers. Bustling markets, street-side cafes and avenues lined with flame trees make this one of East Africa's most absorbing port cities.

There are around a dozen national parks and reserves in Mozambique. These range from the game reserves on the mainland, where Big Five animals can be sighted on a safari holiday, to the marine parks of the Indian Ocean coast, which are ideal for beach breaks.
