Balearic Islands

Sun-kissed shores framed by verdant mountains

Luxury Spain beach holidays

Introduction

The Balearic Islands – Mallorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera – are among Spain's most idyllic summer holiday destinations, a group of island gems in the Mediterranean Sea to the east of Valencia on the mainland of Spain. But, despite the islands' well-earned popularity among sun-seekers, all four have retained much of their intrinsic beauty and there are still many quiet corners to enjoy. Speak to our specialists for their insider tips, personal recommendations and the latest special offers.

Mallorca

The largest of the islands is Mallorca, where the original sun-and-sea tourism has developed in recent years to incorporate agro tourism initiatives and boutique accommodation in its rural and mountainous interior – a very different holiday experience to the traditional coastal resorts and an increasingly popular alternative.

There are also opportunities for walking in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, playing golf on world-class courses and driving along scenic coastal routes. Each of these activities could easily be the basis for a Mallorca holiday in its own right, or as a diversion from lazy days beside the sea at one of the main coastal resorts.

Ibiza, Minorca & Formentera

Ibiza, the home of the rave, also has plenty of surprises – not least the stunning northern half, as well as its charismatic capital, Ibiza Town, which has history and architectural ambience alongside its buzzy bars and cool clubs.

Ibiza, Balearic Islands

Minorca – the ‘small island' – and tranquil Formentera are the other two islands in the Balearic group. Quieter than their famous neighbours, these islands have a wonderfully relaxed and easy-going vibe, with stays often based around relaxing on or exploring secluded sandy bays, or venturing into the interior for historical excursions or wildlife spotting.

Where to go in Balearic Islands

Formentera island, Spain

Formentera

Formentera is perhaps the last stronghold of the relaxed spirit of the Balearics in the 1960s. The laidback vibe that drew Bob Dylan here still lingers on this languid island, thanks in part to its World Heritage listing and the ban on beachside construction.

Ibiza Town, Ibiza

Ibiza

The Balearic island of Ibiza may be the birthplace of the rave, and thousands of clubbers and fashionistas may pour onto the bars and clubs and beaches in the summer. But there's far more to the island than that.

Cathedral Palma de Mallorca

Mallorca

Mallorca is the largest of Spain's Balearic Islands, with a history far more fascinating than its reputation as a sun, sea and sand holiday destination would suggest. Package tourism here began in the 1960s, and while it has monopolised parts of the island, much remains unspoilt.
