Introduction
The Eastern Fjords are the oldest region of Iceland, shaped during the last Ice Age; they are also the region most steeped in local lore. Rumour has it these hills are populated with elfin settlements and the vast beauty of this area makes it easy to believe that such places could exist in the surrounding hills.
This is a region of majestic mountains, wide fjords, jagged peeks and vast expanses of black desert. Landscapes here vary from the rust coloured soil of the Lónsöræfi wilderness to the wide fjords and cascades of Borgarfjörður Eystri, where, during the winter, you can go ice climbing among the frozen waterfalls.
Take a drive through mountain passes home to large herds of reindeer, before heading onto the popular destinations of Hofn and Skaftafell National Park to the south.
