Introduction
Finland is often referred to as 'the land of a thousand lakes', though in reality this number is closer to 180,000. Eastern Finland is the province where the majority of these waterways are concentrated, earning the region the title of Lakeland.
Kayaking is one of the best ways to experience the beauty of this region. One of the most popular destinations for water activities in Lakeland is Lake Saimaa, one of the largest fresh water lakes in Europe. Though you may not realise it with all the islands and jutting outcroppings that break up the watery expanse.
In the winter these shallow networks freeze over and are covered by a layer of snow, vanishing into the rest of the landscape until the spring melts reveal their tranquil waters once again. In the summer months the network of connecting canals around Kuopio make cruises and day trips possible on the lakes once again.
