Introduction
Lanzarote's oldest and busiest beach resort is Puerto de la Carmen, located on the sunny south coast of the island within easy distance of the capital, Arrecife, and the nearby airport. The resort stretches out along a six-kilometre golden sand beach, which is excellent for swimming and watersports.
Cycling, jogging and shopping along the Puerto del Carmen promenade are other possible activities in between soaking up the sunshine on the beach. Like many of Lanzarote's tourism centres, Puerto de la Carmen was originally a fishing village, and the old harbour remains a lovely place for a gentle stroll or to dine in the Canarian seafood restaurants that line the waterfront. The new town, in contrast, caters to a more hedonistic crowd, with assorted bars, casinos and nightclubs providing a place to party till late.
