The ancient city of Jerash has been occupied continuously for 6,500 years and comes a close second to Petra as a top Jordan attraction. It was conquered by Emperor Pompey in 63 BC and became one of the ten great Roman cities of the Decapolis League.
The Dead Sea marks the lowest point on earth, at 420 metres below sea level. The River Jordan, where Jesus was baptised at Bethany Beyond the Jordan, is one of several rivers that flow into this large and highly saline lake.
Wadi Rum is among the most beguiling places for Jordan travel. Towering rock faces rise up from the red desert, weathered over centuries into ridges and domes. These peaks are a dramatic sight amid the surrounding dunes and flat desert terrain.
Petra is Jordan's most celebrated attraction and an essential Jordan travel experience. This spectacular ancient city was hewn out of the craggy mountains by the Nabateans and added to by the Romans. In its heyday it was an important trading post for silk and spices.
