Location
Set on the central east coast of what is known as the ‘Garden Isle’, the 25-acre resort enjoys a secluded beachfront position adjacent to Nukolii Beach Park. Head away from the waters for tropical rainforests and cascading waterfalls while jagged, carpeted cliffs frame golden beaches on its coast; there’s no shortage of breathtaking hiking trails. You also won’t be surprised to learn that everything from Jurassic Park to Pirates of the Caribbean have been set here. Perhaps kayak along Wailua River, passing a traditional Hawaiian village, play a round of golf or snorkel with tropical fish just off the coast.
Accommodation
Plantation-style rooms feature light colour schemes dotted with dark wood furnishings. Expect white shutters and oversized headboards as French windows invite the views in. You’ll have to choose between rooms overlooking the lagoon, pool, ocean or surrounding mountains, with the latter particularly peaceful. Suites come with cosy sitting areas, wet bars and balconies to make the most of the resort’s excellent location.
Dining
At Naupaka, buffet breakfasts include omelettes, freshly baked pastries and breads, fresh fruit and a full range of cooked goodies. There’s also house made crab cake egg benedict and Belgian waffles all served on the restaurant’s sun-drenched terrace. Come the evening, Pacific-inspired preparations, including sashimi and steaks, are served by tiki-torch light. For lunch, head to the poolside Driftwood Bar & Grille where dishes include everything from three plate Hawaiian lunches to wraps and burgers. There’s also the casual dining atmosphere of Shutter’s Lounge where spare ribs and flatbreads are accompanied by nightly live music.
Facilities
The resort’s oceanfront features four swimming pools complete with waterslides, lounges and hot tubs. There’s also the Hawaiian Rainforest Spa with all massages, facials and body treatments giving complimentary sauna access. And, for exercise freaks, there’s the 24-hour fitness centre’s wide selection of cardio machines and weights. Enquire about the timings of the resort’s activities with everything from traditional fireside chants and hula lessons to wine tasting and koi feeding. There’s even a free introductory scuba session.
