Elite Plaza Hotel, Gothenburg

Location

All the world’s great cities have their standout hotels and this is Gothenburg’s. Centrally located in the downtown area, just 700m from both the harbour and the train station, the Elite Plaza Hotel is housed in a neoclassical masterpiece dating back to 1889, whose carefully preserved original features include intricate mosaic floors, stucco arches crafted from Italian marble, and rich, dark-wood panelling.

Accommodation 

While each of the 135 rooms and suites adopts a different palette of colours and textures, the high ceilings, richly upholstered furnishings and effortless sense of space lend them all a sense of timeless elegance. That’s not to say this is Old World luxury. Shades of beige, cherry and lime give the suites on the fifth floor and distinctly modern feel. Velvet leather sofas are cast in imperial purple. And giant works of art tastefully bridge the gap between the 19th and 21st centuries.

Dining

Dine 20 metres beneath a glass roof in the stylish surrounds of the Swea Hof restaurant, whose specialities include the seafood so prevalent on Sweden’s west coast. Sink into an armchair, Martini in hand, at the next door Plaza Bar.
