Location

This long-standing Wexas favourite is ideally situated close to the main town of Hanga Roa and Easter Island’s international airport. However, as you gaze out from Explora’s curving windows to an endless Pacific horizon, it’s perhaps easy to forget that civilisation is so close at hand. The surrounding countryside is some of Rapa Nui’s most scenic, providing almost endless opportunities for hikes and bike rides along coastal paths and to the island’s enigmatic stone moai.

Accommodation

The lodge has just 30 rooms: 26 Varúa Rooms and four larger Raa Suites, each with a separate living area, hot tub and sweeping views of the coastline and ocean beyond; silent, private and spacious, they provides a place of pure relaxation, a restful retreat after a day’s island exploration. Wood tones and polished floors contrast with colourful touches in the cushions and quilts that adorn large comfortable beds while a lack of television and WiFi – only available in the common areas – add to the sense of perfect isolation.

Situated in the main lodge, the curved design of the restaurant makes the most of those wonderful coastal views – the perfect accompaniment to dishes designed to be both light and healthy. Take time to contemplate your surroundings while sampling local specialities supported by a comprehensive list of Chilean and international wines.

Facilities

Explora is renowned for its programme of activities and excursions, with bi-lingual guides on hand to divulge their knowledge of the island’s archaeological and natural attractions. In between exploring remote beaches, volcanic craters and those famous moai, perhaps join a snorkelling trip, a guided coastal cruise, a group hike or a fishing expedition; there’s a total of 15 different options to choose from. Meanwhile, back at the lodge, enjoy relaxing afternoons by the heated outdoor pool, take a dip in the open-air Jacuzzi, unwind with a therapeutic massage or visit the shop where you can find local artisanal products and books on the island’s history and heritage.
