Farmhouse Inn, Sonoma

In an unassuming location on a quiet roadside, you’d be forgiven for feeling surprised when you discover Farmhouse Inn’s delights. It's definitely luxurious, but its location in the heart of the laidback Sonoma wine country means it retains the sense of countryside charm that makes this region so appealing. Pretty cobbled paths framed by lavender plants lead to individual cottages, which feature heated floors, complimentary mini bars with curated wines, enormous free standing jetted tubs and personal patios. In the even more opulent suites, there’s outdoor fireplaces, private balconies, marble baths overlooking the surrounding forest, saunas and steam showers. Guests even receive warm home-baked cookies and a glass of milk as part of the turndown service.

A few metres away lies the extremely popular Michelin-starred restaurant. The tasting menu alongside local wines is particularly spectacular, but you’ll enjoy the same exquisite standard dining a la carte, with the likes of seared scallops, grilled octopus and their speciality, Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit (rabbit prepared three ways) among the delicacies, paired with a fine wine that the sommeliers are more than happy to help you pick.

Sonoma’s focus on the farm-to-table movement is continued in Farmhouse Inn's spa, where they use organic homemade products – indulge in a couple’s treatment before enjoying the personal outdoor bath tub and shower. Outside, there’s a heated swimming pool and hot tub surrounded by deckchairs and firepits for cooking s'mores. And, of course, the expansive Sonoma wine country is on the doorstep, perfectly explored with flight tasting, personal sommelier guides and winery visits. The hotel will even organise complimentary wine tasting tours to a whole host of nearby wineries based on your specific tastes, accompanied with advice from your personal sommelier – and there's private chauffeurs to take you there.
