Location
The forested hills of Hakone set the scene for this traditional ryokan whose expansive valley views from elevated balconies create a oneness with the region’s unspoilt nature. With a hot spring history stretching back almost 1,300 years, it really is a place to get away from it all and escape the bustle of daily life. However, despite this enticing remoteness, it’s easily reached with regular Shinkansen services from the capital, Tokyo, to Hakone (34 minutes) followed by a 15-minute transfer.
Accommodation
Traditional rooms come with open-air hot spring baths on private terraces, each one overlooking forested views of Hakone mountain peaks. Throughout the ryokan, guests will find thoughtful touches from hand carved, copper plated rooms keys to individual works of art and intricate sculptures from the local region.
Dining
With a focus on seafood, the restaurant’s seasonal menu is a celebration of regional Japanese fare. Carefully prepared and beautifully presented, the extensive menu is accompanied by crafted cocktails, champagnes, wines and a selection of premium sakes.
Facilities
Aside from those wonderful views, the main reason to stay here is the hot spring baths. And, with a three baths inside and a further two outdoors there’s plenty of choice for a relaxing soak; as usual there are separate tubs for men and women. There’s also a spa offering everything from reflexology to facials along with an outdoor pool.
