The Fortress Resort and Spa, Galle

Location

The Fortress Resort & Spa – a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World – is a long-time Wexas favourite. Its location is superb, commanding a beachfront position just 17km from the Dutch colonial town of Galle, on Sri Lanka’s sensational south coast. Huge ramparts and bastions enclose UNESCO-listed Galle, whose picturesque fort was the inspiration for this standout hotel. 

Accommodation

Rooms and suites are beautifully decorated in a retro modernist style using contemporary Sri Lankan furnishings. All have private balconies with views of the Indian Ocean and immaculate landscaped gardens. Bose home theatre systems, pillow menus and private butler service all add to the luxury in the higher-grade suites.

Dining

There are no military rations at this fort. Of the three restaurants, Heat offers wood-fired pizzas and sizzling dishes pulled straight from the tandoori oven. Other options include Pepper, which looks out at the ocean and blends the flavours of old Ceylon with the modern-day fashions of Asia, and Duo, a fine-dining restaurant with an excellent wine list and views to match.

Facilities

A gorgeous infinity pool takes centre stage and seems to melt into the waters of the Indian Ocean. You’ll also find a full-service spa complete with yoga pavilion and fitness centre. The beaches here are beautiful and it’s common to spot Sri Lanka’s iconic stilt fishermen perched above the waves.
