The Meritage Resort and Spa is on the southern edge of the city of Napa, making it one of the closest options for an escape from San Francisco. With high ceilings, Tuscan-inspired décor and balconies and patios that look out across the vineyards, you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve landed in Italy. The opulent lobby, featuring plush sofas and sprawling fireplaces, sets the scene for the gold and purple tones of the rooms that feel opulent but never pretentious, featuring patios, king beds and natural stone bathrooms. Over in the vast suites, fireplaces, oversized bathtubs and private balconies afford guests splendid views of the acres of vineyard surrounds.
The hotel’s main restaurant, Siena, feels cosy and rustic with timber-beamed ceilings and frescoed walls, showcasing fresh Californian cuisine with a pronounced Tuscan influence. For something more casual, the sports-themed Crush Ultra Lounge is a perfect place for a spot of lunch – the fish tacos are excellent – and also offers pool tables, six bowling lanes, big screen TVs and plenty of comfy couches. For breakfast and lunch, Blend keeps la dolce vita going with gelato, Italian coffee, fresh pastries and other baked goods, and there's even a pour-your-own mini wine bar where you can grab a glass to take out on a picnic among the vineyards and surrounding hills. To really focus on the wine, though, follow your nose to the Trinitas Cellars Tasting Room, where wine tastings, food pairings and cellar tours take place – they're particularly known for Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The full-service spa, Spa Terra, is 40 feet underground, beneath nine acres of hillside vineyards, and features delicately lit and exquisite relaxation rooms, with a sumptuous carpet making it all feel extra luxe, alongside waterfalls, hot pools to soak in, steam-room grottos and a comprehensive list of therapies and treatments. Back at ground level, there's a swimming pool with elegant cabanas for hire and a poolside bar overlooking the surrounding vineyards, and a 1,650-square-foot fitness centre opens right onto the greenery. Take a walk up the steps to the vast vineyard deck, stopping along the way to learn about the different types of growing grapes and to marvel at the enormous Grape Crusher statue, a landmark of the wine country.
