Route
Plying the Irrawaddy – that grand river that streaks through Myanmar’s centre – The Strand is focused between the twin delights of Bagan and Mandalay in the country’s core, both geographically and culturally. Two itineraries are available – four nights from Bagan to Mandalay and three nights in reverse – as journeys stop off at former royal capitals, riverside villages and cottage industries. Witness Ava’s rebirth marked by 19th century watchtowers and 11th century pagodas, summit Saging’s stupa-studded hills and marvel at the majestic seven tiers of Mingun’s pagodas. Either side, you’ll be treated to Mandalay’s Royal Palace beauty and Bagan’s lost empire heritage with its 2,200 temples, stupas and pagodas that pockmark a verdant plain.
Accommodation
While you’ll be treated to an international standard of luxury, you’ll find The Strand is firmly placed. Teakwood floors and intricate detailing are typical of Burmese craftsmanship while it’s impossible to escape from those gorgeous Irrawaddy views, provided by floor-to-ceiling windows. Watch as traditional river life plays out in front of your armchair while complimentary WiFi, international TV channels and en suite rain showers mix in a touch of modernity. Upgrade to a Strand Cabin for a French balcony and sitting area or the State Suite for the ultimate in spacious luxury.
Dining
While the panoramic views of the Strand Restaurant and the al fresco sundeck provide an unrivalled mealtime setting, you might want to take advantage of your cabin’s 24-hour butler service for drinks and snacks. However, don’t miss out on the wine tastings, barbecues and cocktail evenings held on the upper deck or the restaurant’s excellent gastronomy. International renowned chefs use only the freshest and finest ingredients to create gourmet cuisine, arranged to fulfil all your requirements. Along the way, you’ll also enjoy a range of signature dining options including welcome breakfasts held in the leafy gardens of a lacquerware workshop and candlelit sand dune dinners, backdropped by centuries-old heritage.
Facilities
During the day, expert guides will bring you to everything from glass hilltop monasteries and golden pagodas to authentic villages and craft factories while, back on board, you’ll be equally well entertained. Relax by the custom swimming pool, indulge at the bar or book into a treatment at the compact spa where a range of massages are complemented by a fitness room stocked with cardiovascular and weight equipment. If liquid refreshment is more your thing, perhaps consult the sommelier who’ll be able to recommend a fine vintage from the temperature-controlled wine cellar.
