Perfectly in tune with its surroundings, this luxury resort by Alila is set amid 160 acres of old-growth forest in the iconic Big Sur region of California’s rugged Pacific coast. It’s the perfect place to get away from it all, utterly relaxing and romantic; watch the sun set over the ocean, explore rolling hills and reconnect with your body and spirit.
Inside, guestrooms are furnished in rustic-chic style, with natural elements – particularly wood and stone – paired with woollen throws, patterned cushions and window shutters that maximise both light and privacy. What’s more, all rooms come with a private deck, perfect for enjoying a glass of local wine, while in some, roaring fires crank up the cosiness. For added space, and even more luxury, suites add in the likes of outside showers, private spa and hot tubs and, in the case of the Pacific House Suite, double-height ceilings and distant ocean views. For larger groups and families looking for a bit more space, the Coast House joins two suites together with a large lounge, while for honeymooners, the stunning Cottage House is all about seclusion, a 722 square foot hideaway featuring an oversized hammocks, hot tub a wet bar and views out across the forest canyon.
For something a bit different, the resort also offers gusts a glamping option in Ventana’s redwood forest. Here, safari-style canvas tents come equipped with king-sized beds, fire pits – wood included – comfy Adirondack chairs and heated blankets. There’s also a bathhouse with teak-enclosed showers, heated floors and marble vanities. Guests are also able to upgrade to a stay that includes a guided hike, picnic lunch and surprise welcome amenity.
Back at the resort itself, dining at the Sur House brings together elements of the forest and sea, showcasing locally reared meats and freshly caught seafood on menus inspired by the sustainable ingredients of California’s central Pacific coast. There’s also a 10,000-bottle cellar on site, so guests have the pick of the finest wines, both old world and new, and it’s all paired with stunning views across the Big Sur coastline.
The indulgence doesn’t end there, however, as the Spa Alila provides healing treatments rooted in the ancient traditions of Asia. Expect everything from plunge pools to pampering treatments in a truly idyllic setting, surrounded by Big Sur’s valleys and redwood forests, and looking out across the Pacific.
