Introduction
Arusha is Tanzania's ‘safari capital', a bustling tourism centre surrounded by fertile farmland and lush coffee plantations. The nearby Arusha National Park is dominated by Africa's tenth-highest peak, 4,566-metre Mount Meru, and also provides fine views of the continent's highest mountain, Kilimanjaro. Multi-day treks can be organised to the summit of both mountains and are an increasingly popular activity for travellers in this part of the country.
Wildlife in the park includes a resident herd of buffalo that lives in the Ngurdoto Crater - a mini version of Ngorongoro Crater - and several species of monkey. Despite being less than an hour's drive from Arusha, it remains a relatively off-the-beaten-track destination.
