Introduction
Mozambique's magical offshore islands are the East African country's standout attraction. Travelling to these islands can be a Mozambique travel highlight in itself - via a dreamy dhow cruise or a scenic flight that reveals sweeping views of an azure sea interrupted by white sand bars and palm-lined isles down below.
The islands are perfect for a luxury beach holiday in their own right, with some top class hotels and island lodges in which to stay. Another option is to build a tailor made itinerary, with an island holiday following a safari in Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique, or another wildlife reserve in neighbouring Tanzania and South Africa. Some of the islands, such as Ibo and Ilha de Moçambique, have faded historic churches, forts and other buildings from the days of Portuguese rule.
