Introduction
North of the Orange River and Namaqualand extends into a vast and varied region. After the winter rainfall the area explodes into a riotous blaze of colour as the yearly wild flower bloom carpets the earth. Namaqualand is a biodiversity hotpspot and the world's most diverse arid region with more than 40% of the species - which includes 6,000 plant species, 250 species of bird, 78 mammal species and 132 types of reptile - are found nowhere else on earth. The Richtersveld Transfrontier Park is a hauntingly beautiful landscape of lava mountains and sandy plains that forms Africa's largest mountain desert park.
