Introduction
Twyfelfontein is an important site of ancient rock engravings in the Kunene region. Local Damara named it ‘jumping fountain', although it was renamed ‘doubtful fountain' by the first white farmer to acquire the land after he considered it too weak to support life.
Designated Namibia's first World Heritage site, more than 2500 engravings have been cut into the rockface of huge boulders strewn around the area. Many depict game species, including elephant rhino, lion and antelope, and it is thought they have shamanic origins to imbue hunters with the power to catch their prey.
Nearby sites such as Burnt Mountain, the Petrified Forest, and the Organ Pipes also dazzle visitors.
