Introduction
North of Mombasa is a long stretch of beach, which runs for many miles, all the way up to the wide mouth of Kilifi Creek, a popular stop for the international yachting circuit. In between, the beaches of Nyali, Kikambala, Shanzu and Vipingo offer between them every sort of accommodation - with many luxury hotel resorts facing the wide stretches of sand and the beguilingly warm waters of the Indian Ocean.
More deserted beaches can be found at Mtwapa and Takaungu, but the offshore reefs run right along them all, rich with coral, turtles and tropical fish. North of Kilifi lie the enchanting historic Swahili settlements of Malindi and Lamu island, both enticing travellers further up the coast.
