Introduction
The town of Kumily is the gateway to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the largest and most visited wildlife reserves in India. Set among the mountains of the Western Ghats, the park, also known as Thekkady, borders Tamil Nadu and is renowned for its elephants, sambar, malabar giant squirrel, wild boar and extensive birdlife, as well as elusive tigers and leopards.
